New Fall Adventure Package Expands Autumn “Drive” Options

Golf, biking and Hummer tours just a few of the landmark resort’s options for exploring Muskoka’s leaf-changing season

Huntsville, ON, August 11, 2008 – Canada’s end-of-summer rituals are fairly typical. Cottages and flip flops get packed up, sweaters get pulled out, TV re-runs end, and kids head back to school. But two hours north of Toronto, Muskoka’s landmark Deerhurst Resort is putting an energetic spin on the nature destination’s usual leisurely leaf-peeping with a new Fall Adventure package.

Given its densely forested landscape of maple, birch, beech and sumac interspersed with glittering lakes, autumn in Muskoka is certainly beautiful, as well as temperate, relatively uncrowded and easy to reach.

“Beyond admiring the foliage, this Deerhurst Fall getaway taps into people’s desire to get out of their cars, be active and enjoy nature at their own speed,” says Director of Sales & Marketing Clee Varon.

The 780-acre lakeside retreat prides itself on offering extensive outdoor and indoor recreation options year-round. So Fall Adventure Package activities range from golf on the renowned championship Deerhurst Highlands course or the gentler Deerhurst Lakeside and tours of Peninsula Lake in a covered boat, to horseback trail riding, and paintball games on a bunkered terrain next to the resort’s private airstrip.

Weekend-only options also include guided canoe trips in nearby Algonquin Park, bike tours through the acclaimed Buckwallow Cycling Centre’s 25 kilometers of technical trails, and off-road excursions in a souped-up H1 Hummer powered by bio-diesel recycled from the resort's kitchens.

For those intent on a more traditional fall trip, Deerhurst is also an ideal starting point for the region’s many seasonal events, offering plenty of tips on when and how to visit happenings like the classic Huntsville Fall Fair (September 19-21), the Muskoka Autumn Studio Tour (September 27-28) featuring over 25 artists in mediums from pottery to metal work, the fruit and fun-filled Bala Cranberry Festival (October 17-19) and that Halloween favourite the Great Pumpkin Trail (October 31) at Muskoka Heritage Place.

From early September through Thanksgiving, Deerhurst guests can also warm up to Executive Chef Rory Golden’s favourite autumn flavours including resort-harvested apples and maple syrup as well as comfort foods like a velvety bisque made from locally harvested butternut squash. And given the bounty of luscious fall desserts produced by Deerhurst’s dedicated pasty kitchen, you may find yourself claiming, “Pie, pie again – please.”

MAKING THE TRIP

From September 1 to October 13, 2008, Deerhurst Resort’s two-night Fall Adventure package bundles15 percent savings on regular room and activity rates with select accommodations and a $200 credit valid toward over a dozen different outdoor activities, from CDN $269 per night based on double occupancy. Founded in 1896, the 400-room Deerhurst Resort is located two hours and two turns north of Toronto on Muskoka’s Peninsula Lake. Prized as both a leisure and corporate retreat, the 780-acre property encompasses two 18-hole golf courses, a recently updated spa, live stage productions and the most on-site activities on any resort in Eastern Canada. In 2007, Deerhurst was selected as one of Condé Nast Traveler magazine’s “Top 100 Golf Resorts” worldwide, and in 2010 it will be the host venue when Canada welcomes the G8 Summit.
