Huntsville GOLFER's legacy continues
Inaugural Gerry Lepage Golf Tournament
set for September 5
Huntsville, ON, July 29, 2010 – Although it began with a tragic loss, Deerhurst Resort’s golf department is establishing a new tradition to commemorate a much-loved colleague and friend who lived the game and help support his family.
The Gerry Lepage Memorial Golf Tournament is scheduled for its debut competition Sunday, September 5 at Deerhurst Highlands golf course in Huntsville.
On June 27, while working at the course he loved, Lepage suffered an accidental injury. Despite the efforts of medical teams at Huntsville Memorial Hospital and St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, he passed away the next day at age 69.
Deeply shocked and saddened, Deerhurst Resort staff and management responded to the loss by reaching out to Lepage’s fiancée, his daughter and her family, determined to make a difference in the midst of everything they had to cope with.
The Gerry Lepage Trust Fund had been set up to assist them.
“When we heard that, an annual golf tournament benefitting his trust just seemed like a perfect, lasting way to honour Gerry’s passion for golf and his contribution to our golf family while keeping resources for his family going and his memory alive,” said event organizer and Deerhurst Director of Golf Danny Jackson.
The entry fee for the 2010 Gerry Lepage Memorial is $125 per person or $450 for a team of four, with all proceeds going to his trust fund. Following the tournament, which includes green fees, cart and prizes, players will be treated to a reception and dinner with an opportunity to share stories and remember Lepage’s many contributions to the Huntsville golf community
Registration opens at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at 10:00 a.m. To sign up, call (705) 789-7113 ext. 4494 or email Deerhurst Tournament Coordinator Brad Cook.
Lepage was a retired AT&T electronic technician and data specialist who moved to the Huntsville area in 1998 from Toronto. An avid golfer, he played whenever he could at Deerhurst Lakeside and Deerhurst Highlands as well as other Muskoka courses. In 1999 Lepage began work as a play coordinator and starter at the nine-hole course at Delta Grandview, where he soon became a fixture of the course’s Thursday evening Ladies’ Night. In 2003 he joined Deerhurst Highlands as a marshal.
“This is one of those times when, together, we can take our grief and do some good,” noted Deerhurst Resort General Manager Joseph Klein.
“Muskoka and its many golfers are close-knit; we’re hoping you’ll come out together this September and join us in celebrating Gerry’s life and continuing a great legacy for his loved ones.”
