What’s Susur Lee Doing in Muskoka?

The name, Susur Lee, conjures images of exquisite dishes served in sleek urban settings by servers in crisp white shirts and aprons. His culinary style, like his restaurants, is precise yet unexpected, on trend but pushing boundaries. You’ve seen him on Top Chef Masters (where he earned the highest score in the history of the show), as a judge on Food Network Canada’s Chopped Canada, and you’ve heard about his several Toronto restaurants – Lee, Bent, Luckee and Lee Kitchen and maybe even know about his restaurant ventures in Singapore, New York, Washington DC and Hong Kong. Definitely not a country boy.

So, what’s Susur Lee doing in Muskoka this Fall? Where loons replace the sound of car horns, the only rush hour is how fast you can get to the lake?

On October 17th, Chef Lee will make a return visit to Deerhurst Resort – his second in two years – to prepare and host a special evening where guests can experience his culinary artistry in a classic, relaxed Muskoka setting. His first culinary weekend at Deerhurst in 2013 was the first time he’d been to ‘cottage country’ since visiting a friend some 30 years prior. Not wanting to wait that long until his next visit, this time, he’s teaming up with top California winery, Ironstone Vineyards, to design a wine-pairing dinner experience that could be talked about for years to come.

Why Deerhurst? As one of the founding members of the Savour Muskoka culinary trail, the resort’s chefs have long been proponents of incorporating unexpected ingredients into dishes based on what was available locally. Don’t be surprised to see some of the resort’s own maple syrup in a dinner entrée, or hand-picked cat-tail hearts in a salad (they taste like hearts of palm) or fresh Arctic Char brought in live and prepared onsite.

That’s the kind of culinary spirit and camaraderie that makes Chef Lee feel welcome in the Deerhurst kitchen. He became known as one of Canada’s best known chefs for his daring blend of textures and flavours, after all.

So what can you expect from an evening with Chef Susur Lee in Muskoka? Let’s start with the five courses put together by the master himself: Szechuan Multigrain Prawn with Orange Glaze followed by Tuna Watermelon Ceviche. Then tuck you’ll tuck into Braised Beef & Wild Mushroom Beggar’s Purse with Parmesan Polenta before savouring Tempura of Guacamole with Smoked Chili Chipotle. Then top it off with Yuzu & Lemon Tart with Buckthorn Berry Puree. Chef Lee will introduce each course and mingle after the dinner, with plenty of time for photos and questions.
This exquisite meal will feature perfectly matched wine pairings by Ironstone Vineyards. A family owned and operated winery located in Murphys, in the heart of the Sierra Foothills in California’s scenic Golf Rush Country. Known for wines produced using over a dozen grape varieties with some of the most popular being Zinfandel, Syrah, Cabernet France and Cabernet Sauvignon.

So whether you are a foodie, a follower of Susur Lee, a wine lover, or looking for an exceptional weekend escape with someone special, An Evening with Susur Lee at Deerhurst Resort has it all. Think of it as a chance to break away from the everyday, and dive into a world of pure indulgence: food, wine, Muskoka – plus if you Instagram the heck out of it all your friends will be jealous!
